Now, instead of a sad day, the day for me is bittersweet. See, both of my children's birthdays have something to do with my Mom. Colleen, who is named after her, was born the day before my Mom's birthday. So on Mom's birthday again, it is hard being sad when I've just celebrated the birth of my first child, the one who taught me about all this Mommy business in the first place. I have a sneaking suspicion that my Mom, wherever she may be, planned it this way-- so that, rather than being sad on these days, she gave me something to be joyful about and it lets me know that she is still looking out for me. I love her and I miss her all the time.

Thursday I head to the Motherland (ie California) to see my baby brother graduate from high school. We are all quite grown up now and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to be there on this important day in his life. So many changes . . .

Colleen graduated from pre-K this weekend as well and she is pleased as punch. It was quite cute and the first "class sing" that I've been to, so it was a first for me there. Here she is with her little cap and gown and diploma:

And there has been knitting, and sewing but if you would like to see that, please, check me out on ravelry. If you do this, then you become OBLIGATED to knit it and then the knitting becomes no fun. Case in point, there have been a rash of babies at work and I made the mistake of telling people "Well I really must knit something then!" Since I only have a short time off from school left until I start the crazy 2 classes in 6 weeks I really want to be knitting stuff for ME, ME, ME!!!! Ah-hem.

Enter Sheldon. I've only ever knit one toy before, Knitty's Bubby for my son, and let's just say I did not enjoy it. They are so fiddley and I have to use my DPNs which I've pretty much shunned since I discovered socks on two circs. Then, once you have all the little pieces you have to sew them on and make sure they won't fall off. So why I felt compelled to commit to not one, but TWO knitted toys for babies is beyond me. Oy!

The next baby knit is the best baby sweater for a boy ever, I've got the details on ravelry and will post pics as soon as I have them. The garments I don't mind so much, but the toys are really getting to me. As soon as I finish them, I'll post pics, I know, I haven't posted any pics at all, but really, it is all I can do just to get them on ravelry.

Well. . .

I think we all knew that was going to happen, my extremely contrary nature took over and I did not post yesterday. We got there, got parking right up close, it wasn't too crowded, we found a great spot and began to put our stuff down. Come to find out that the beach umbrella that I bought back in Texas is missing a piece-- specifically, the part that lodges in the sand and provides one with shade. So, okay, no big deal right, we have plenty of sunscreen, I've decided I'm going to put some on later (despite the fact that I haven't been in public in a bikini in about three years or so) and I proceed to have a lie down. I flip over, pretty judiciously I think, about every ten minutes or so. We spend about two hours there, the kids love it, they are playing in the water, we built an appropriate for Florida sand alligator replete with sea shell scales and hop in the car to go home. When I get out of the car, Hub says "Oh Wifey, your whole backside is all RED!" Well he wasn't kidding. Despite the numerous flips, my entire backside is as red as a can of Coke. Now I've been pretty lucky, I've had probably two or three times that I've been sunburned in my life, mostly on the shoulders and nose, but my whole backside? C'mon! So I've been too busy slathering on aloe to knit tonight, I promise there will be knitting content (and pictures) tomorrow. May you all be sunburn free this summer.

On an odd side note; did I imagine this, or was one taught in school to capitalize the names of the seasons? I've always capitalized them but this semester I've noticed that Word had begun to mark it as a grammatical error. Does anyone know the answer?

3.75

Hi, it’s me again. I see that the last time I posted was in March. I don’t particularly feel bad about that since that is my GPA up there in the title. All bragging aside, I’m pretty damn proud of my accomplishment. For instance, I took my final math class this semester—I officially NEVER HAVE TO TAKE MATH AGAIN! I do have to say though that without the Hub, there is no way that I could have done it. So I want to publicly thank him for all his help; he was alone with the kids four nights a week while I was in class, he made dinner, picked up, and would again wrangle them on weekends when I had homework to do. I love you honey, thanks again!

I actually got quite a bit of knitting in during this time all things considered. How did I do this? Well I’ve been operating on about 6-7 hours of sleep since January. I just arranged my ravelry queue based on date started and I have done 11 things since I started school. It is amazing what lengths one will go to do the things they loved.

This is the first weekend that I haven’t had any homework to do so we have been jamming a lot of stuff in. When everyone else wakes up we are going to take the kids to the beach for the first time! We feel guilty that we have been three times and we haven’t taken them once.

So. I officially have the next six weeks off until I take my next round of classes. I’ve decided that I’m going to try and post daily. We’ll see how that works out since I’m notorious for letting my poor blog languish.

Other things that happened while I was gone:

Colleen lost her first tooth
Finn began talking regularly, sentences and all!
Hub and I celebrated three years of marriage
I had my two year knitting anniversary
I had a birthday. I’m now officially in my “late twenties”
I got a great new job
We’ve started looking for a house to buy!
I went to school full time while working full time with a full time job at home and triumphed!

What the Hell

Book Meme

Look at the list of (100) books below.
Bold the ones you’ve read.
Italicize the ones you want to read.
Leave blank the ones that you aren’t interested in.

(Movies don’t count.)

1. How are you? Things are well here, school is going a lot better than I had anticipated, thus far, I have all As and one B. The B is in math so I think I'm doing pretty well. I just hope I don't jinx it writing that!

I got a new job, I wasn't even looking and a really great job practically fell in my lap! The kids and the hub are all doing well. They miss me terribly since I'm in class four nights a week, and I spend the weekends studying/writing/reading but we are managing to spend some quality time. It just makes me appreciate the time we do have that much better and I realize that this is temporary.

Thanks to Janna for saying that my blog makes her day! Since I pretty much dropped the ball on that one, I would just like to say that if you are reading this, hey, you make my day! I am keeping up with the blogs and ravelry, I'm just a little slower than usual.

I have managed, somehow, to knit quite a bit actually. Not with my usual speed, but I sqeeze it in time and again. It is my belief that you make time for the people and the things you love and I love knitting. For my birthday in Feb. I received a gift certificate for the LYS here in Tampa, I bought a bunch of green Cotolino with which to make the Josephine top. I finished it in a couple of weeks. Here are some pics:

Hope you are all doing well!

In Which I am in WAY Over My Head

This is, dear readers, an advance apology to you. Many of you know that I have two small children. Many of you also know that I work full time. What many of you don't know is that I am now enrolled in my Senior year of my Literature BA and that I am also going to school full time. So, if I don't post for a while, do not be alarmed. Merely send up a little prayer that I survive this year.

What I Knit This Year

Today was my first day back at work after Christmas . . . break (can't bring myself to call it vacation) let me just say that the day went slowly but that I was very productive and got all caught up by lunchtime. Can I get a "woot?"

So I've seen several blogs out there with the theme "What is the favorite thing you knit last year?" I decided that I too, would post on this topic. So without further ado, I would have to say that my favorite thing that I knit last year was the "Tilted Duster." I remember when I first saw this pattern. I knew that I would make it. As soon as I could, I bought the yarn on Knit Picks. I bought the worsted weight swish superwash in Clematis Heather. Eagerly I waited. The minute the yarn came in all other projects were set aside. I swatched and even washed my swatch which is a pretty big deal for me!

Fast forward to two weeks later and I had all the pieces ready for assembly. A sale at Jo-Anns led to the purchase of the most perfect buttons for this piece; delicate shell with scroll work detail. I even remember that I was watching "Fight Club" and drinking coffee while seaming. Ah, and then she was done. And she fit-- perfectly in fact. I wear it a great deal, in the office mostly at work since it is pretty hot in Florida, but I'm just glad to get to wear it. I get many compliments and have even been asked a few times where someone could buy one and have gotten the chance to say that I made it.

So yes, the Tilted Duster is my favorite knit in 2007 despite the fact that I even impressed myself by knitting this:

Happy New Year, what is your favorite thing you knit last year?

Christmas Vacation Ramblings

Well I'm back from my trip to California. All in all it was a good trip, I got to see many friends and family and I finally got to introduce my hubby to everyone (married almost three years and yet no one had met him!) and the kiddos had a blast as well. Things I could have done without include sleeping in my teenage brothers' twin bed with my hubby and Finn in the room, postponing Xmas by one day and having to rent a car, but again, all in all it was a good time.

Yes, you read that right, we postponed Xmas. Here is why; we flew in on Sunday the 23rd and didn't get into California until 4am our time. Finn didn't sleep on the entire flight and looked like a zombie baby when we landed. Then there was the hour drive from the airport to my Dad's house. Okay. So then the next night, Xmas eve, we go to our very dear freinds' house for our traditional cookie eat and gift exchange and I figured we would be there about an hour and a half and then go (we didn't get there until 8pm) but I was wrong. We were there until nearly midnight. When we got home, we had zero energy to place gifts or fill stockings so we decided to postpone the whole thing. Which we did. Anyone that came by to see us had to be let in on the ruse, but it all worked well and we pulled it off.

My hubby and I also managed to squeeze in a quick overnight trip to The City that I love, San Francisco. Ever since I can remember, I have loved it there. When I was old enough to drive I would go down every weekend that I could. I also have great memories of my Mom there which enhances my love of the city. When I was going to transfer to "big college" from junior college, University of California, San Francisco was choice number one and I wanted to live there the rest of my life. Life has a funny way of changing plans on you and Mom unexpectedly passed away. I ended up joining the military so that I would later have a chance to go to college. Anyway, the whole point of this is that I love it there and this trip further reinforced it because I got to share a place I love with a person I love very dearly, my hubby. We had a great time despite the fact that I left the camera at my Dad's and didn't take a single photo.

We checked into our hotel and walked to Chinatown (after a brief stop at Artfibers, I love that you can walk places!) and found some awesome chinese food, the first good chinese I've had in a good long time, we saw a 25 foot long carved wood fertility penis and I also bought a pashmina scarf on the cheap. The following day we went to Imagiknit which didn't open until 11 (it was 10) so we walked to a small cafe to have coffee and wait. It was worth it, I highly recommend this store if you are ever in the area. There was so much to look at but I settled on two skeins of Dream in Color Smooshy. From there we headed to my personal favorite spot, The Cliff House, the ruins of the Sutro Baths and the best view in the city at Sutro Heights. We had lunch at the Cliff House and from there drove home. It was a great time and very nice to have a vacation within our vacation as my Dad and brothers kept an eye on the kiddos.

So. I hope you had a great holiday season and happy New Year. As I look back on this year, I can't believe how much things have changed and how much they are going to change this year as well. I started off the year in the military in Texas and then got out in June and headed to Florida to start our new life. Although we make considerably less than we did, I feel like we made the right decision and I'm looking forward to starting the next chapter in my life as I've been accepted at the University of South Florida. I will be a Senior and I can't wait for the school year to start.

Some New Years Resolutions for this year include getting fit by exercising more (or at all) and eating better and not eating out quite so much, reading at least a book a month (I used to read about 3-4 books a month but since I took up knitting, that has sort of petered out) and knitting from the stash in 2008. I know this is a lofty goal but as I have enough in the stash to last me for the year, I think I can do it. There are several caveats to this, if it is a gift, it doesn't count, and if I need some yarn for something for someone's birthday etc, then that doesn't count. Oj, I'm getting the jitters already.

Well I go back to work tomorrow, it is going to be rough after my week and a half off. Look, a cute baby!

Christmas knitting is in full swing here at my house. It has been all Christmas present knitting all the time. Here is my list:

5 pairs of Felted Clogs

3 Somethings for my knitty group gals

2 Scarves

1 Beanie

1 Sweater for the hubster

Here is what I have done:

2 pairs of Felted Clogs (unfelted)

3 Somethings for my knitty group gals

2 Scarves

Not bad eh? On weeknights I average one Felted Clog a night and this weekend I will see if I can finish the rest. I like the pattern a lot, thank goodness, since I'm knitting so many of them. When I get bored, I come up with other ways to wear them, observe:

They also make wonderful hats! Do you like my "sassy face" in the top picture? And that is just the knitting to-do list. I'm also planning to sew two dresses and an apron. The reason behind this craziness is simple-- I'm broke but I have a lot of yarn. Since I can't really buy presents for anyone but my children, everyone will have to settle for the knitted gifts. Personally, I would prefer a knitted gift (really any knitting related gift for that matter) because of the time spent, but I think that is something that only knitters can understand.

As a final note I leave you with this photo, my son's hair had gotten so long that he couldn't see and this was my temporary solution to the problem. Do you think he likes it?

He is about to go all firestarter on me!

The Curse

I think it was Bill Cosby that said that there is a very strong curse that your parents put on you when you are young. The curse goes a little something like this; "I hope you have one that is just like you so you will know how it feels!" I would just like to say that it works. My daughter is EXACTLY like me. It is very strange, now that the 80's are back with such a vengence, she is even dressing and playing with toys that I played with in my youth. She wants nothing more than My Little Ponies, Strawberry Shortcake dolls and yes, even Care Bears. For my son there are Transformers. Kinda makes me wonder if they are going to be bringing back the illustrious Thundercats or He-Man any time soon (I totally had Skeletor's castle!)

Anyway back to the daughter. Today she asked me for a side pony tail. As she is leaving the house I realize she is dressed like me circa 1986, side ponytail, drop waist oversized tunic shirt and leggings. Add some Keds into the mix and yes, she has become me. She is very assertive to the point of bossiness and sassy and doesn't know when to hold her tongue. It's strange, and I'm very worried for the time she turns 14 when I really have to pay my dues (lets just say that I shaved my head and wore combat boots, nuff said).

In knitting news, Christmas knitting is in full swing over here. I have about a million pairs of Fiber Trends Felted Clogs to make for various family (and non family) members as well as a few scarves and assorted lovely things which shall remain a secret. My ultra secret sweater for the hub has been discovered and is no longer a secret :( Sound familiar San Antonio S n' B gals? Oh and Amy, this pic is for you:

Yeah, they are getting pretty big. When we first moved to Tampa, I would say that I had two projects that had been languishing on the needles for more than six months. One was a blanket, and the other was my Telemark Sweater. It seemed as though any time I cast on for something new, there they were making me feel guilty about not finishing them. I know that there are many knitters out there who don't have this issue. They can cast on and knit willy-nilly. For me, the girl who hates unfinished business, well it isn't so easy. So without any further ado may I present a finished blanket:

And yes, here she is, my Telemark Sweater. Finished. I can't hardly believe it myself. This sweater is a personal benchmark in my knitting. I love new techniques and this sweater was full of them. Two handed, stranded knitting. Steeks and calculating my sweater pattern based on percentages. Well I'm happy to report that she is finished and is just lovely. And most importantly of all, she fits. I just wish it were cold enough to wear! I suppose one could crank up the A/C though ;)

And you didn't forget about my baby sweater obsession: yes, the February Baby Sweater is finished. I also made some lovely Sarrtje's Booties for good measure. I told the gals in my knitting group that the race is on, the first one of them to have a baby girl will receive the sweater and boots.

And while I'm on such a finishing roll, may I present my Swallowtail Shawl:

The great thing about being this way though is that I have so many finished things to show ya'll!
As a quick aside, I just want to say "Howdy" to all my gals from the SnB in San Antonio. I was thinking about you guys this weekend and sorely wishing I were there at Kid n' Ewe! A quick look at your blogs has shown me that you guys scored some good stuff. And Amanda, your yarns and bags are lovely!

Well that is all for now. I'm going to go and work on a super secret project now.

If You Want to Destroy my Sweater . . .

So there was this sweater. The EZ February Baby Sweater from Knitters Almanac to be exact. Well, I fell in love with it. So much so that the minute I had any spare cash I ordered the book and waited. And waited. And waited.

The post office here decided on the same day that it arrived that it was undeliverable and promptly sent it back to Amazon. After calling Amazon, they upgraded me to two day shipping. Well my two day shipping turned into five day shipping. Not cool. After many near frantic phone calls (did I mention my obsession with this sweater?) I opted that since clearly the USPS and UPS were incapable of delivering to my address that I would pick them up. Which I did. This is what the Hub bought me for being so distraught;

Book in hand, all other projects were put on the backburner for this sweater. Did I mention that I don't know anyone who is haveing a baby girl any time soon? I cast on immediately with Koigu Kersti. I love this yarn, but in my eagerness forgot my personal cardinal rule of knitting which is this; If a pattern has a pretty stitch, or a stitch that is the main focus, typically I will use a plain yarn to give the stitch a chance to shine. On the flip side of this, if the yarn is going to be the main focus (a yarn such as Koigu, for example) than the best bet would be to knit a plain pattern. So this is how the sweater looked before I ripped it out:

And this is the sweater now. I'm much more pleased with it overall since I can now see the pattern and I think I'm in love with this yarn. I'm using some Rowan Wool Cotton that I picked up forever ago and have been trying to figure out what to do with ever since.

I think the Koigu Kersti is destined for the Baby Surprise Jacket. Whoops!

This is the Post That Never Ends . . .

Welcome to my new home! Due to blogger issues I cannot log into my former blog (hoorayyarn.blogspot.com) and so decided that once online again I would just start a new one. How do you like it? I got the template from freebloggerdesigns.com and I messed with the background color and here it is!

So, first off, I want to shout out to the Stitch and Bitch gals back in San Antonio! I miss you guys (and the cake, but really, I miss you guys)! You are an awesome group of gals (and guys, Hi David!) and I hope that we can keep in touch through the wonder that is the internet.

For those of you who don't know, back in June of this year my hubby and I separated from the USAF and moved to Tampa, Fl. This has been a bumpy move to say the least (lawyers, foreclosure, and bills--oh my!) but we are doing a lot better now that we are a bit more settled. This is what our living room looked like when our furniture finally arrived:

                                                                      Tons o' boxes

This is what I did during the first two months spent looking, begging and pleading for work:

The first thing I did though was find a knitting group. Thanks to Tampa Bay Knit and Crochet I met the lovely Kelly, Sandy and Robyn. They are an awesome group of ladies. We all get along really well and have hung out outside of the knitting group as well. We will be having a Halloween party! Thanks guys for keeping my chin up when the going gets rough (and thanks for the potato Sandy).

So on to the knitting. Right now I'm knitting the Swallowtail Shawl from IK in JoJoLand Melody and the horrible yellow sock. I liked this sock when it was still mystery yarn. Kelly gave it to me and I could tell that it was self-patterning. I took it and cast on, once I saw what the yarn would do in terms of it's pattern I pretty much gave up on it. I also hope to finish my Telemark sweater soon, you know, once I get over the fear of steeks (don't worry David, there will be before and after photos, you know, if I don't pass out first!)

Phew! I hope to post here much more than my previous blog. Take care, ya'll!

Test Test

I'm testing my blog.
